The prophet is the preacher's ideal. The humblest preacher looks at the spokesman of God, afire with the truth, filled with the Spirit, accredited by the touch of the Eternal Word, and says, 'That is what I would be, if I could.' Yet few attain to the ideal.
The preacher is at once more and less than the prophet: - widely more, immeasurably less. More, because he must serve and run and walk on many lines, while the prophet sends his full fiery force down one straight line: less, because only at rare moments, if at all, docs he enter into the glory of inspiration, when he knows that what he speaks is the living word of the living God to living men, which they question at their peril.
These lectures are designed for preachers, rather than for prophets, for the many who stand in common places, not for the few called to stand on some Mount Carmel.
