If the heart is averse, how slow the mind is to understand or receive a truth! Young people are apt to look on the race of teachers as their natural foes. Who has failed to notice the skill of a certain lawyer in examining witnesses, in his first creating a pleasant impression on their minds, gaining their confidence and good will? Especially is this a necessity when attendance is voluntary, and the teacher depends for his success largely on the affection of his pupil-: then the theme becomes delightful for the love the pupil bears the presenter. If my scholar loves me he will generally follow me. What can be more conducive to such a relation than visitation at the home of the scholar? If I can secure the hearty cooperation of the home my teaching of an hour on the Sabbath is doubled in power, for the interest of the parent will secure the proper study of the lesson, and my time can be employed in unfolding and applying its great truths. Most superintendents would be surprised, if they carefully compared the attendance of their scholars with the roll, to see how small the average was. Nothing will tend so surely to remedy the tardiness and absence of the pupil as the certainty of a visit from the teacher within a day or two to discover the reason. I can only prepare and adapt the lesson to the wants of my scholar by a knowledge of the books he reads, the company he keeps, and the temptations to which he is exposed: these a visit to the home alone can reveal.
