The history of British television comes under the spotlight from the perspective of the independent producers. Author Michael Darlow was firmly in this camp, and his insights are frequently fascinating, covering the struggle of the independents to get a look-in during the old ITV network years, their chance to get on air with the formation of Channel 4, and the consequent changes in broadcasting regulation which have led to the disappearence of the regional ITV companies in England, the emergence of Sky (for better or worse), and the multi-channel age."Independents Struggle" is essential reading for anybody interested in UK television history, or anyone passionate about the quality of what ends up on our screens. The final chapter in particular should be taken as a wake-up call by those in government involved in determining broadcasting regulation.
