Investment bubbles and speculative manias have existed for as long as humans have been involved in markets. Is it possible for investors to identify emerging bubbles and then profit from their inflation? Likewise, can investors avoid the bursting of these bubbles, and the extreme volatility and losses found in their aftermath to survive to invest another day?Over 70 years ago, Benjamin Graham and David Dodd proposed valuing stocks with earnings smoothed across multiple years. Robert Shiller later popularized this method with his version of the cyclically adjusted price-to-earnings (CAPE) ratio in the late 1990s and correctly issued a timely warning of poor stock returns to follow in the coming years. We apply this valuation metric across more than 40 foreign markets and find it both practical and useful. Indeed, we witness even greater examples of bubbles and busts abroad than in the United States. We then create a trading system to build global stock portfolios, and find significant outperformance by selecting markets based on relative and absolute valuation.

A charming, humble little book that every investor should read, and if the ground covered is unfamiliar, continue on with the reading list at the end and especially Meb's websites and newsletters. Don't expect get rich quick formulas or complex theories, or 7 step guides to riches. The book offers an extremely simple yet powerful piece of kit for assessing value in stock markets, something most investors and talking heads seem to think is irrelevant. At the end of the day, value is the ONLY thing investors should be concerned with (i.e. that the value of what you buy should be more than the price you pay for it) and this book helps in no small way to guide investors down the road towards sanity.

Meb Faber is one of modern day's great communicators and this book continues to support that. A great book for anyone wanting to understand more about asset allocation and the thought process behind it. Excellent and informative read!

As usual from Meb Faber, a succinct read. All the key points included and no superfluous babble. Could have expanded on trend following filters a bit more, with some results (e.g. investing in bottom 10 CAPE markets but only if above 10 MMA)
